The World of Xartāarn

If you are on this page, then it is likely that you arrived from a link on ChainedTiger’s page on roleplay.me or roleplayer.me, pointing to a Gor-like male slave-type character.

CW: Descriptions of violence, gore, nudity, and bondage.

Before I get eaten alive by the Gorean fandom, I am only calling it “Gor-like“/”Gorean-esque”, because its inspiration came mostly from some of the Gor novels, notably Outlaw, Beasts, and Fighting-Slave.  As such, it might have a bit of a feel like some Gor-type world, and may contain some elements and similarities to the Gor-verse.  I do not, however, even pretend to claim that to conform to proper Gorean lore.

I initially started this page as a brief description of my character, and it ended up becoming an entire world-building project! This takes place in “Xaartārn”, a female-dominated monarchy ruled by a “Var” (Empress), where most men are, at best, slaves.

Due to the nature of the world environment, he is referred to here as “the behemoth” (all lower-case) for reasons given in the description.  He should also be referred to throughout as “it” (neuter-gender), but that gets very awkward to read (as we also use “it” as a placeholder pronoun).  I also initially wrote this as a first-person account.  I usually do RP in first-person, but for descriptions, I couldn’t get as detailed as I’d like unless I rewrote it in third-person.  (I’ve left the first-person version up here.)

At first glance, “The behemoth” might seem to be a hyper-muscular human man. To a non-Xaartā, his brands and bindings may give the appearance of a human slave. However, any Xaartā giving even the slightest glance would not even deem him worthy enough to be called a slave. Although a slave is barely considered a person, albeit the lowest class of person, a slave is still a person. “The behemoth” is not even that; he is classified as a “slave-beast“, less than human. In Xaartārn, slave-beasts are considered creatures that only resemble muscular human men. They are even less than beasts, as they may be subjected to cruelties that may not even be shown to animals. A slave-beast is identified by the brands burnt into the chest, heavy bindings around the limbs, and when in public, an animal mask that completely covers the head. Also, a slave-beast is forbidden from being known by any sort of name, nor even as “he”, only ever as “it”. Thus, “the behemoth” is merely a behemoth, a type of giant ox.

Background

Burnt into the bare chest of the behemoth are many brandings. They mark him as: a slave-beast; a beast of burden; a beast of the absolute lowest class of beast; and the personal property of the Var of Xaartārn. Other brands are the result of various punishments.  He resides within the outer grounds of the Imperial Palace, his “quarters” are chains hanging from the tops of a pair of guard towers, suspending his arms between them. He is now considered to have always resided there, as the Var’s personal beast of burden.

He was, of course, not always here. At some point in the past, he was considered an actual human man, captured by the Xaartārn army as spoils of war, and was thrown into the arena with several other prisoners, bound to stakes with chains and rope. He soon found that it was meant to be an execution-style fight, as entering the arena was a great horned beast, that seemed to be some kind of hybrid between an ox and a lion. It started going around the arena, stopping at each stake to bite and claw the person. But not to death. It toyed with them, going on to make an attack on the next person, then it went back to the previous stake, for another bite out of the still-alive person. He struggled with his bindings, becoming more enraged with each passing minute. When it came to him, his legs were free, which he thrust right into its eyes. He fought his arms free, then wrestled the ferocious giant beast with his bare hands (and feet, and teeth), eventually killing it. No sooner did the beast fall to its death that an arrow sunk into his neck.

He woke up in a cell, this time bound in even heavier chains, and with heavily armed guards, arrows and spears pointed at him. He was taken into a courtroom and put on trial. There was no doubt about his guilt. He killed the Var’s behemoth in front of everybody, including the judge and jury. His sentence: to replace the Var’s behemoth, even if that replacement had to be his own body. However, until he found that replacement, every ten minutes, a person he saved from the behemoth would be beheaded. As the axe was about to fall on the first head, he tackled the headsman, letting the axe clatter to the ground.

He changed completely, begging to be made a slave-beast, utterly surrendering himself to be branded and chained, submitting himself completely to his Masters: the Var as Master and Var in Waiting as Next Master, vowing to them his total loyalty and submission, and to serve and obey them completely and unquestioningly. Upon his honour, he will never break these oaths.

He would never find out if the others were released or executed.

Although he is meant to be a replacement for the Var’s behemoth, as an admission that he can only be, at, best, a woefully inadequate substitution, he must never, at least in his presence, be called a behemoth; he may only be called an ox, or even only a beast.

Appearance

A lot of what is used on the behemoth is taken or made from the corpse of the Var’s original (dead) behemoth; though, as he is now deemed to have always been the Var’s behemoth, the actual animal is now said to be a wild one that he fought, to save his Master.

Being a slave-beast, the behemoth is forbidden from being seen in public without wearing a mask completely covering his head. The mask used on him was made from the horned head of the Var’s original behemoth. It completely covers his head, with only holes for his eyes and the base of his nose. When the mask is tightened around his head, the mask’s mouth is drawn inwards, forcing itself into his own mouth and making it impossible for him to speak. This is by design. When he is summoned to appear before the Var, the eye holes are covered from the inside by a piece of behemoth hide, not even allowing the tiniest crack of light through.

When his head is not concealed inside the mask, he appear quite young, as a man just barely, if even out of his teens. His eyes are very unusually-coloured, one eye being steel grey and the other bright blue. His hair is a sweaty mess from constantly taking the behemoth head mask on and off, sunbleached almost white but with some brown streaks, and occasionally trimmed with a few snips of garden shears. His ears are full of earrings, studs, bars, and other piercings.  In addition, a spiked nose ring (its bottom spikes are just visible poking out through the nose hole in the mask) is linked with narrow chains to piercings in the side of his ears. Though the Var claims to have given them to him as gifts, it is more realistic to assume that she allowed him to retain them from prior to his captivity).

Restraints and Binding Chains

The behemoth is the strongest of all slave-beasts (so he is also stronger than any human), leading to him being bound the heaviest of restraints and chains, about a quarter-ton of a black metal about three times the weight of steel. Despite this, he finds them light as a feather compared to his other bindings, the oaths of servitude that weigh heavily upon his honour.

A huge collar encircles his neck, surrounded by very long, sharp spikes. On either side, beginning at a spiked nipple-ring from which hangs a large behemoth fang, a thin chain runs on his chest to the side of the collar. From there, a much larger chain links it to the underside of a manacle on his wrist. On the top of the manacle, a short length of binding chain is left dangling. From the front of the collar hangs a short length of an even heavier binding chain.

A pair of bands encircle his enormous upper arms, in addition to a solid metal belt around his waist, as well as massive leg-irons. All of these bands are very thick, made from the same heavy black metal, and surrounded with the same long, sharp spikes as the collar.  They were all forged directly in place around his limbs, complete with spikes and chains in place.

At the front of the belt is an ornament like a belt buckle of a behemoth’s head, the horns on top made from behemoth claws; in between the spikes are anchor points for cart harnesses.  Hanging just below the behemoth head buckle is a thin, wide band, made from the same black metal as everything else, with spikes on its top side, narrower but just as long as the others, like stiletti, and with a couple of links of the wristband chain hanging from its underside. The chain between the leg irons is so thick that the links had to be cast from the mould used for making the anchor chain for warships.  Short binding chains hang from the outsides of the ankle shackles.  In addition, from the bottom of the front of each ankle shackle are small chains (like the nipple-ring one) running down the tops of his feet, to toe rings with embedded behemoth claws that extend in front of his feet over the gaps between his toes.

It may seem that some of these are ornamental meant to look impressive, to be “eye-candy” for the Var. But they severely restrain his movements and actions, even if such actions are already forbidden by edicts from the Var.  The sharp spikes will tear any form of clothing to shreds, keeping his back bared to the merciless whips of his overseers; the spikes on the upper-arm bands also prevent him from bringing my arms in beside his body, forcing him to keep them outstretched; and the foot chains and toe-ring claws render it nearly impossible to wear any footwear, making him remain barefoot.

Whips

When put to a task, and only when on a task, he is driven fiercely by two taskmasters, either palace guards or punishment masters, their driving whips each a cat of nine tails made from behemoth hide; but the four strands braided for each tail are only braided halfway, the ends being left loose and knotted along their length. Whenever not on an active task, they are hung from either side of his collar and wrapped around his outstretched arms.

Whenever he is not on a task, and the behemoth-hide whips wrapped around his arms, the punishment whips are used. Also known as “vines of pain”, they are made from a type of vine known to have a sting that is said to be so severe that animals just barely brushing against the live plant in the wild, will try to throw themselves off a cliff rather than endure the pain.  Only the most expert whip masters, usually two at a time, are permitted to wield them.  With his limbs bound so tightly that he cannot even flinch, for a single whipping of several hundred to a few thousand lashes, all he can do is think of it as a test of endurance.

When he is brought to the Var to be whipped for her entertainment, fire and lightning whips, amongst others, are also used.

Rules

This is only a small part of the very lengthy, detailed, and complex set of rules, laws, edicts, and restrictions surrounding every tiny aspect of the behemoth’s existence.

[Please don’t go to this link (yet), it isn’t finished yet! If you do, it’s a half-finished summary of Behemoth’s restrictions, told from his perspective. I’m working on a knowledge base including Xaartārn.]
